Oracle 10g - the clock is ticking!
Oracle 10g was introduced in 2003. It remains in use with many customers who are entirely satisfied with its performance and are disinclined to suffer the disruption and cost of a migration to 11g.
However, there are several reasons why we recommend customers to upgrade now:
Reason 1: Premier Support is coming to an end:
Oracle has a lifetime support policy. Premier Support provides you with maintenance and support of your Oracle Database, Oracle Fusion Middleware, and Oracle Applications for five years from their general availability date.
- For customers who are on Database Release 10.1, Premier Support ended January 2009
- For customers on Database Release 10.2, Premier Support ended July 2010.
Beyond these dates, Oracle offers Extended Support for a further three years. This is less comprehensive than Premier Support, and there is an additional fee.
Reason 2: Oracle 11g is tried and tested
Many DBA's are reluctant to take the responsibility for early adoption of a new version and we would agree. But now that 11gr2 has been released this argument no longer applies.
Reason 3: Oracle 11g Benefits
There are of course many new features in 11g. For us, the most compelling are the business and ROI arguments: The Business Case for Oracle 11g
Reason 4: Five years peace of mind...
And finally, since 11gr2 has just been released and will have Premier Support for 5 years from the release date, by upgrading now you can benefit from the longest possible period of Premier Support.
Recommendations:
-
Plan ahead
-
Review business requirements and need for change/growth over five years
-
Review hardware platform. Consider capacity and age. As a general guide, server hardware should be replaced when it is about 4/5 years old. When specifying new hardware, take advice on Oracle licensing implications to ensure best value. Review your hardware topology (clustering, grid computing)
-
Ensure you have appropriate Oracle skills available for the migration
-
Review Oracle licensing
-
Devise a robust migration plan
